A Hackney Town Hall Wedding

Hackney Town Hall is one of the most photogenic register offices in London. Built between 1934 and 1937 by the architects Lanchester & Lodge and opened in July 1937, it is Grade II listed, and Historic England describes its Art Deco interiors as exceptionally unaltered. A careful refurbishment finished in 2017 brought the whole building back to its best.

For photos, that means a lot to work with. The Portland stone front gives you a clean, bright backdrop for arrivals and confetti. Inside, marble stairs sweep left and right from the entrance hall with polished brass rails, and the panelled rooms have a warm, timeless feel that suits both colour and black and white images.

Hackney Town Hall Wedding Photos: What to Know

Ceremonies at Hackney Town Hall run back to back, and late guests are not let in, so everyone should arrive in good time. We arrive before your guests so we can photograph you arriving, family gathering in the entrance hall and the nervous laughs before you go in.

Confetti is not allowed on the steps, but biodegradable confetti is fine at the bottom of them, which is where most couples have their confetti moment. If you hire a room through Hackney Venues, slots are 50 minutes and only natural petals are allowed, with no rice or confetti cannons. After the ceremony we take your family groups outside, then head off for portraits while your guests make their way to the next stop.

You do not need to go far. The Edwardian front of the Hackney Empire, right next door, makes a striking backdrop. A few minutes away, the churchyard gardens of St John-at-Hackney are green and peaceful, with mature trees and old stone.

With a little more time, London Fields is a short walk away for open grass and soft light, and Broadway Market and the Regent’s Canal are close enough for colourful street and waterside portraits. We will plan a route that fits your timings and where you are heading to celebrate.
