Southwark Register Office is in Camberwell House, a handsome Georgian building on Peckham Road. It was built in 1790 as three large houses, which are all Grade II listed, along with the railings at the front and a lamp post in the courtyard.
The building has a long and unusual history: it was the first Royal Naval School, then a private asylum from 1846 until 1955, before becoming council offices. Today it gives couples a warm, period setting that feels very different from the grand civic town halls elsewhere in London, with brick, railings and sash windows that photograph beautifully.
